i told an estate agent on the telephone that i wished to come out of a sole agreement and wanted to go multi agent they agreed to this and agreed a commission price on the telephone now i have sold my property with another agent and they are claiming their commission still. i recieved nothing in writing from them can they do this and will a verbal contract stand up in court?

I think that you would be very hard pushed to "prove" this, unless there was some supporting evidence, like a recording of the telephone conversation. The best thing to do is inform your solicitor of all the details. But I don't hold out much hope - you should always get important things in writing. Not as convient as the phone but you have something to show that it "happened". This comes down to your word against their's.
