Probably.  The sugar will act as a preservative

It didn't go "out of date"...it was "best before".

if you haven't wanted to eat it for at least 3 years - why now?

If the seal is unbroken it will probably be OK, open it and see

I was thinking of baking a cake and using it for filling

Should be fine. Open it, smell it, put a bit on a plate to see the consistency. If all seems as it should, taste it.

btw - I still have a tin of red kidney beans that I had when I moved house in 1986 - anyone want them?

I'd have them, Dave, but it would be cheaper to buy a can than post them

Question Author

Try them Dave - I'm sure you'll be fine

btw the preserve was TTD Sainsburys

yes

that is why it is called con-sarve

the v high sugwr content acts as an inhibitore

Did I do a  course on food preservation before fridges - well yes actually

Funnily enough, I've just opened a jar of cherry jam dated 2020. It's just fine. Probably not a good plan to leave it too long to use up though.

When dad died I found a jar of Robertson's mincemeat, best before 23 years ago. It did look a little on the dark side, smelled ok, but I'm not that brave, it went in the bin. Then found some home made jam dated 12 years previous, I don't eat jam and no one else was willing to try it, although it looked in perfect condition.

Just came across a bag of salt with a date of 1995 .

Do you think it's still  ok ?

^not a serious question...I hope.

I ignore all dates on food and go by the look, smell and consistency.

Best before dates are for the benefit of the manufacturer, not the consumer.  Use by dates are for the benefit of the consumer, but I ignore them too.

Gingebee, my friend used to run a shop and had to put BB dates on salt.  Apparently it is to do with additives and deterioration in quality of natural products.  It still used to make me shake my head though.

So that's  a yes then ?

Yes, even if it had additives using it now won't do you any harm but it may not taste as good.

Do you mean it might be less salty😂.
