They were British soliders stationed at rorke's drift although there were a few dutch missionaries there, most of the force was made up of British soliders from the 24th Regiment of Foot. Hence the awards of the Victoria cross. As for who did the voice over - who knows....
The missionary Otto Witt was Swedish in the film. He was also a real person who lived a quarter of a mile from the Buffalo River with his wife and three children, on land formerly owned by James Rorke.
