Though sometimes you get great ad versions of songs like What A Wonderful World for the Suzuki ad and Hard Rain for some other SUV which are far removed from the original and inexplicably unavailable commercially,
The worst one is the total destruction of You've Got A Friend for The AA with its ridiculous bad cut phrasing. The guy can sing , but the song is ruined by the atrocious editing (assume to fit with the ad)

yay mikeydred! it's not just me who's being a picky one then! That advert drives me insane! They did it to another one too, thankfully I can't remember which one.
also, i believe that many record labels use adverts as a way to promote re-releases of their back catalogue, hence all the classic Levis ads. It's probably often cheaper to license an original than to commission a jingle house to re-record it.

Any singer or group with past hits would be mad to turn down the chance to revive their back catalogue through advertising - especially if they've been out of favour for a few years..
