Minstrels
I think it was later used for something else as well, because whenever this question comes up, usually all the young folk say it's something else, and then those of us born before punk say it's Minstrels. Can't remember what the more recent one is, but then I remember Adam And The Ants and am thus senile.
"Minstrels" used to be called "All Chocolate Treets" (as opposed to Toffee Treets or Peanut Treets), it was these that originally had the slogan.
I may be wrong but minstrels are and were made gby galaxy and treets were made by mars, which then became m&ms didnt they? I think they are different. I definitely remember treets and minstrels out at the same time but I only really remember the peanut ones.
In France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, peanut M&M's were known as Treets until 1990. (In the UK, Treets like Minstrels came in only one color: brown.) The chocolate versions were called Bonitos until the brand became M&M's. Bonitos were identical to classical M&M's but for the white 'm', replaced on them by a series of smiley faces . This was partly due to the market dominance of the similar Smarties, which made competing under anything but a very high-profile brand difficult, with the added risk of reducing sales of the existing Treets brand. Though Treets used the same "melt in your mouth not in your hand" slogan in the UK in the 1970s, this was transferred to Minstrels when the Treets brand was dropped.

Mars make galaxy apparently but treets were available till 1990 and minstrels were definitely around in 1975.
The slogan was used to advertise Treets which were a lot smaller than Minstrels (more like the size of Smarties) but as wi many things, brand names change as do manufacturers and the whole thing becomes confused (as do I)
Treets and M&M's are the same product?
I loved Treets still miss em to this day, i thought they disappeared in the mid 80's when the nasty tasting little M&M's came over from America. I thought perhaps M&m's had bought out Treets not wanting to face such strong competition.
I also remember them being in Revels and when Treets disappeared they changed the name in the Revel packs to just peanut. The peanut ones in Revels now are just chocolate coated where as before they also had a crispy coating.
I don't remember the slogan being used for Treets i also thought it was for Minstrels. I can only recall one advert a bride to be trying on wedding dresses and stuffing her face with chocolate at the same time, just like brides do on the run up to their wedding!

But:

Minstrels are the sweet that, according to old advertising, would melt in your mouth and not in your hand. They're made by Nestle - the same people that make Galaxy,

But who knows?

I remember it being Minstrels.

Found this:

"One of the best ad men was Rosser Reeves. He'd made a name for himself creating campaigns for big clients like Anacin, Colgate, and M&M's. Famous for catchy slogans like "Melts in your mouth, not in your hands."
The web pages that Ethel quote are incorrect
Minstels are made by Mars not Nestle.
Treets were the old Minstrels, also were available in peanut and toffee. Melts in your mouth and not in your hand was the slogan used in the adverts.
Does antyone remember the tv ad with the woman being fitted out for the white wedding dress eating treets?
Mars is the company name and the name of one of their bars......
They also make Snickers, Ripple, Tracker, Topic, Milky Way,
Milky Way Stars, Minstrels, Revels, Planets, Malteesers, Starburst(Opal Fruits), Skittles, Twix, Galaxy(choc, nut, fruit and nut,and caramel), Celebrations, M&M's(plain, peanut and crispy),Tunes, Lockets, Mars Delight, Bisc &. Twixels, Bounty, Choozers and remember Spangles and Pacers(the old Opal Mints)
