Does anyone else think that the meercat advert is just completely pointless and is just some stupid idea that someone has thrown together? When it comes onto the television it infuriates me because they could do better. I mean meerkats and comparing the market? What on earth is the association between the two?

I love it. Nearly as much as I love Johnny Vegas and Monkey. And the Smash aliens - they have one arm longer than the other. And the Cadbury gorilla.
Blerdy programmes interrupting the class ads.
It is too small a thing to stress about.
one of the best marketing campaigns of recent years...........people are actually trying to buy meerkat t-shirts..........
This has been answered here before on AB and it's that with a Russian accent meerkat sounds like market - simple as that.
Meerkats (the wild ones) are hugely popular at the moment, with their own tv show, calendars, diaries, desktops downloands, dvds and gawd knows what else.
Very clever ad agency to connect market to meerkat.
one of the ideas behind an ad is to increase brand recognition. Do they automatically make you think of the product? Some supposedly great ads don't actually do this, which in my book means they're not great ads. I can't really remember who Johnny Vegas is supposed to be advertising, but I know the bulldog is Churchill.

I love it, it makes me smile every time. Might send for the fancy dress costume.
it's clever - and we are discussing it, so they've made their point! - and if you look, there really is a whole community at comparethemeerkats.com (believe it or not...) - someone's put a lot of investment in this series of adverts!
I just love adverts. Shake and vac. The PG Tips Chimps. Smash aliens. Johnny and Monkey. Everyone's a fruit and nut case. There's a moose loose about this hoose. Cadbury's gorilla. I'd like to teach the world to sing. It's the real thing. The Christmas Famous Grouse - coooooooooooooooooool. Follow the bear. Fox's bear. The ring of confidence.
Love em all - keep em coming.
Sheila's Wheels!
I liked the advert from the first time I saw it, mainly because I adore Meerkats - not because of the insurance side of it.

One daughter bought me a soft toy Meerkat for Christmas & the other bought me a Meerkat keyring - they're so cute. com.
Aaarrrgg! I hate Sheila's Wheels!!!!
A finger of fudge is just enough. Everyone's a fruit and nut case. Tick a tick a timex tra la laaaa. Wrigleys spearmint gum! The Gold Blend love affair. A Mars a day. The Colgate ring of confidence. For hands that do dishes. OMO! Are you Independent? Matey - cleans the kids and the bath!
Barclays - very clever.
TSB - entertaining.
How can anyone not love Alecsander the Meerkat. He is the coolest thing on telly. love that cravat.
You absolutely must compare the meerkat.

i love the meerkat advert, but what gets me is the gocompare ad now that is annoying!
Only the crumbliest flakiest chocolate. Out on its own, triangular chocolate. We are the Ovaltinies. Can you see a pattern emerging here?
I love the advert!

And read what hc4361 writes. He's hit the nail on the head.

Mind you, I like the Sheilas' Wheels ad as well because I fancy Kate Robbins's sister who's one of the 3 girls!
The meeerkat ads. grate after a while but apparently insurance sales via comparethemarket.com are up by 30%!
I agree re. Go Compare. My fav. ad. was the elephant and the Rollo but it never gets a mention on the top 100 ads.
