Hello Jules if you are there can I ask for more help for my rough collie. He has just got back from the vet and he has given him Advocate instead of Frontline because they wasnt working/ Ben has a nasty red itchy rash that he licks until it bleeds. After what you said about it I am worried about using it. I did mention it to the vet and he said it was fine that it has had bad reviews from farmers giving it to there cows and also dogs but gave the dogs too much. that was why they were ill. Now I don't know what to do.?

I'm not a dog person, but where is the rash? With Advocate (for my cats) you put it between their shoulder blades so they can't lick it off.
Not Jules but my cat and daughter's dog have both been fine with it. If the vet says it's OK why would you take the word of someone on a chat forum over his/hers? Absolutely no offence meant to Jules.
Hi, just checked on our forum as there was a post about Advocate, and from the comments made no one will use it on Collies.

Ladybirder, Collie breeds cannot have some worming and flea medication unless they are clear of the MDR1 gene. Unfortunately not all vets are that clued up on MDR1, and I made sure mine has the up to date list of medication they should avoid.

Why dont you join the Colie forum?

Are you sure he has fleas?
Oh OK Jules thanks. Didn't know about the collie thing. I'll tell my brother as he's got one.
Have a read of this. It contains milbemycin, which is a macrocyclic lactone and can be fatal if given to a dog with the MDR1 sensitivity. I am several collie forums and no-one would consider giving their dogs any drugs in this line,

Many thanks to everyone. Jules I do belong to collienet but havnet been on for ages. but thankyou. xxx Why the vet still gave it to me when I mentioned it as you told me about it the other day. I am still wondering about. Think I will take it back. I was just wondering if anyone else on here has roughs and has used it.?
Here is the list of drugs, even though Advocate is classed as 'safe' in recommended doses, there have been reactions - I know of at least one dog who had a severe skin problem after using it, hence why no one will chance it now.

Milbemax also appears to be on the 'safe' list........but it contains Ivermectin which definitely isnt safe.

I have never heard of that condition jules, I stand corrected, but my dog experience is very limited!
Lilacben, I think I would opt for a skin scraping to determine the problem, but definitely nothing other than Frontline for fleas.
