Dog chewing shrubs
6 Answers
Archie my 6 year old Patterdale terrier is really enjoying the garden in our new rented property but he seems obsessed with the trunks of the shrubs & knaws away at them at every opportunity! Will he come to any harm & how can i stop him? He particularly likes an old straggly rose bush

Ive been in garden this morning clearing the beds & found a collection of hideous garden ornaments much to Archies amusement. He took alot of interest in a rather nasty set of meercats that have big metal spikes to keep them upright...i pulled them up & put the 3 of them into a bucket & hung it on the wall water tap...at least 4 ft off ground..Archie has managed to get one out (the big Daddy meercat who has a bandaged arm & leg...errrr why???) & he chewed its darned head off in the conservatory.horrid things filled with sand & its everywhere...grrrrrrr! wish i could upload a picture as it was a comical sight lol..........im sure Archie is like Grommit.....you know.......using his little sister as a ladder to get to things etc...........
RobertaMary, it is best not to let your dog chew on plants in the garden, as quite a few are toxic to dogs and can make them quite ill, including some tree bark. Two of ours are "gardeners", so like chewing on anything and everything in the garden and the only way I have been able to stop them is to spray the plants and planters with "Get Off" which you can buy in an y good pet shop. Dog don't like the smell of this stuff and so learn to leave the plants / tree alone. But you will have to keep spraying it regularly for quite a while until the dog has leaned to stay away. Our Keeva became very ill when she dug a huge hole in the garden and deep down found old Clematis roots. She ate them and her lips and eyes puffed up and went very red and sore. It took months to get this sorted, so please do be careful. Most people are unaware that they may have plants in their gardens that are poisonous to dogs. Better to be safe and deter them from chewing asap.
My 2 love to munch on anything and everything so I have 'fenced' off the borders to deter them. At the moment I have some fancy 2' high green wire stuff that I got from Wilkinsons. In the past I have had green coated chicken wire strung between small sticks. They could jump it if they wanted to and have once or twice to chase off a cat but on the whole they just can't be bothered. It blends in quite well and is fairly strong so they can't just push it over and it keeps them out of mischief.
