Cat using lawn as toilet

We adopted a cat of approx 3 years old a few months ago. She seems to have been a house cat with her previous owners. If she uses her litter tray, which is very very rarely, she covers it up. However outide, she uses the soil but does not cover it up when she has pooed. Mostly though, she prefers to go on the lawn, some of which has recently been replaced. The vet said that this is unusual behaviour in cats. Please can anyone suggest how we can prevent this or what we could put down to deter her, without harming the lawn if possible.

What is unusual ? Using their owners' garden instead of a neighbour's, in which case it sure is; or not covering it up when they have gone on the lawn, which in my experience is not rare but seems to be compulsory for cats.

Stopping cats fouling where undesirable is an age old problem, and what works with one cat may not work with the next. Since it is your cat, can you not put the dirt box in the corner of the garden and train it to use that location ? If it is already used to a dirt box it may catch on fairly quickly. Once it knows where to go, you may be able to dispense with the dirtbox.

Have you seen her do that or just found the evidence. There is a stray cat the poos on our lawn but my cat digs and burys. Might be better on the lawn than in the vegie garden

I'd have thought her leaving it uncovered was preferable? That way it's easily found, by you, and can be picked up and put in the bin.

Are you absolutely sure it's your cat's poo? Have you actually seen her do it? Because it could be a fox.
My cat is now very old and spends 95% of her time in the house so she uses the litter tray every day. Sometimes she covers over and sometimes she doesn't. What she does do after a poo is fly round the living room at 100 mph in celebration of a successful outcome:-)

Unfortnately, it is our cat who is the culprit, we've seen her through the window and by the time we get outside it's too late. Think we'll try putting the litter tray outside as suggested. Good job she's going to the cattery whilst we're on holiday. I dread to think what the lawn would look like after 2 weeks!
