Dogs As Running Partners

I normally take my dog out for run, 1.5miles and he is fine. Other day my friend wanted to go for a 3mile run and I took my dog. After 2 miles he was tired and I egged him on, big mistake! After about 2.5miles I thought he was going to die. I am annoyed at myself, it took him 2 days to fully recover. I am never taking him 3 miles again, if he would have died I would have been in big trouble with the wife who told me not to take him. I thought dogs were fitter than humans and he would have been fine. NEVER AGAIN! I could kick myself thinking back, I just wanted to keep up with my friend when my real friend was ready to die! He is a Bullmastiff called Benny.

My cousin has a Bullmastiff called Benny.

Bullmastiff's aren't good runners. I have two Malamutes that'll give you a run for your money though. Just don't take Benny again, and NEVER egg a dog on to go further than it is comfortable, they'll literally die to please you :(

As you have found out the hard way Mike - and Benny has found out the harde way - some dogs are better at distance running than others.

If you want to run for three miles, leave Benny at home and borrow a great dane!

If Benny was a collie or another active breed 3 miles would have been nothing at all.

Benny has a short nose and with all the heat he was at a disadvantage to start with ~ big dogs are not really built for long runs.

You are lucky he didn't collapse - carrying him home would have been quite a challenge.

I hope that you are taking water for him to drink when you go running.

Not so odd if Mike 25 is Ummmm's cousin.

I carried him into a shallow part of a lake to cool off, he hates water and started to panic. Funny he hates water, most dogs love it!

I have 2, Betsy and Benny. Betsy doesn't run unless chasing my cat. Benny and Betsy have never been separated from birth and have bonded together like I have never seen.

Cannot believe people are still taking their dogs out running in this hot weather, all round where I live people are also walking their dogs in the full heat of the day. Mine only go out either first thing or late at night - they have a higher body temperature than we do to start with, so they feel the heat more. The rain today has been a welcome change for them.
