Diabetes In Cats?

Just had the vet on the phone to say that our cat's blood glucose level was 27.5. She said that was high but would not confirm that she has diabetes until we get a urine sample tested. Surely a blood test would be enough to diagnose?

Apart from that, what changes will we have to make to help her? Or is it just better to let her have what she wants to eat to keep her happy. She is 15.5 years old..........I'm feeling really sad now.

I would have thought so.

Well depending on the diagnosis being correct and the diabetes needing insulin injections,then it would be better in my opinion to let her have what she wants.

Is her sight normal?

It's a big dilemma. The urine test will confirm the blood results.

There is food for diabetic cats, but we felt the same when Rover was diagnosed with kidney disease. He refused point blank to eat the disgusting muck which is tinned kidney-food (and I could see why), so we feed him on good quality senior cat food. We would rather have a happy cat with a shorter life, than a longer-living miserable one.

Speak to your vet maybe, but at that age, i would feed her what she wants.

I know that, for me anyway, the more information that you have the less you worry.
