How Do You Get Over The Loss Of Your Baby.....
33 Answers
Our border collie cross Jess would have been 12 in four weeks.....she's been fine...getting on but then who isn't.....went to bed with us last night....then at 2am she's scratching the bedroom door to get out.....she gets sick near the door.....i come down and let her out and she just prostrates herself on the patio....we took her to the emergency vet who said she had some sort of tumour that had leaked and there was all fluid around her heart....he could operate but that would only give us a few more weeks with her. So as she was struggling to breathe we had her put to sleep.....but how can i get over it....she was my little girl....she was so clever.....funny......loving. I actually ache as much as i did when my Mother died.....i'm lost.....

He was rescued too, from being locked in permanently and so loved his walks. He was so loving - i really think he knew. He had a sudden intestinal haemorrhage. Vet guessed from poison and i had to have him put to sleep. I still feel guilty for letting him down.
We did get another puppy soon after. It has really helped (we deliberately got a different colour). He didn't replace him, but gave us something positive to look forward to and I'm glad we did.

I still desperately miss my special cat. She died 5 years ago after drinking what the vet thought was anti-freeze. They love it apparently but it WILL kill them. Make sure you don't leave any around.
It does get easier as time passes. I'd still give anything to have her back though.
I've had cats all my life but I loved her like a child.
I am sorry for your loss. x

I really am so sorry for your loss. As others have said the pain will ease but I understand when you say it hurts as much as the loss of your mum. My theory on that is that your dog is with you everyday... 24/7 and this is why it hits you so hard.
As for getting another... only you will know when you are ready, I swore I would never get another when I lost my Dane but I did. It took me 6 weeks but it was 6 weeks of hell... I missed having my 'big dog' so much. Now I will offer another rescue a home most likely with in days. The minute my new Dane came home with me my heart started to heal.
You can never replace a friend like that but they can help to fill in the whole in your heart.
You are in my thoughts. Run free Jess

Jasmin I really hope things were ok with your GSD. My 3 year old has been puking up water since last night, won't eat and can't keep anything down, so if no better by this evening its off to the vets.
Purple Paris, you would certainly not be letting your old girl down by getting another dog, especially if you could give a much needed home to a rescue. Over the next few weeks sadly there will be many needing homes, as people still ignore the pleas not to give puppies as Christmas presents.

Reading all these posts should help you see how much people love their pets and how devastating it is to lose them PP. I have had several pets including three cats, my last cat died a few years ago and I haven't replaced him... yet. I do think it helps to find another pet to care for, to feel their love and companionship. Give yourself time.
