Bank Holiday Vet Charges..

< Coco was being violently sick on Monday, so much so that she seemed on the point of collapse. I rang the vets who said to take her straight in and that a fee of £100 would apply as it was bank holiday. Is this normal practice? We've taken her on a Sunday before without being charged so much, final bill was £150. We'd give anything to help her but thought this a bit cheeky.

A lot of out of hours vet cover is now provided by firms who do only that such as Vets Now, and they charge and expect to be paid before you walk in the door. They save the vets who own the practice having to be on call, but while they can deal with emergencies they often don't have access to your pets records, and are really only providing the emergency service using the vets premises, rather than actually being part of the practice. Smaller vets do tend to do their own out of hours on an 'on call' basis. When you think of the equipment they need to have in the vets and the amount of training they have to do (more years than for doctors) its not really a great deal that they charge under normal circumstances. Worth every penny when you need them!

Both our hounds are getting on a bit now, they're not insured anymore, premium was becoming silly, if we need to we'll bite the bullet and pay up, offset it against what we're not paying in premiums when they don't need anything.
Glad Coco is doing OK.
And I quite understand why Vets charge extra for B/hols, it's because they can, they know we'll pay

We had to pay over £700 to have 3 stitches in our Keeva's pad, they tore out the next day! I then treated the wound myself with honey and vet wrap, the wound was closed in 3 days. Big dogs carry very big vets bills. Recently a friend of ours had a similar pad injury on their dog, very expensive call out to be told the vet couldn't stitch it. I suggested the honey treatment, the vet did not approve! Honey treatment app lead and the vet could not believe the results after 5 days the wound was almost healed.

Pet insurance for our three wolfhound would be crippling, we take our chances, fortunately they very rarely need a vet. In the 6 years we have had the Wolfhounds we have been to the vet about 4 times.

Due to very ill treatment in her first year we think Coco will always be a 'poorly' dog. She has a split in her chest muscle where, the vet thinks, she would've been kicked as a puppy. We wonder if an old injury could be the reason she has so many stomach problems. Thank you all for your comments.

Yes PP, Honey has been used for healing wounds for many years, but of course, vets wont make vast profits by telling you to heal your pets wounds with honey. The NHS use honey dressings, that's where I got the idea from.

We've used honey very successfully to heal minor skin wounds with out horses over the years ...obviously it can't heal everything but you get to know what will work

Yes thanks Anne, she is finding them a great help, she still can't walk far but she is more stable and less pain in her hands.

Havnt read all the comments, but I dont know what it is with people complaining about vet fees. Call in an emergency plumber or electrician on a weekend and they want £100 before they even start. Vets training is longer than that of a GP, and they are dealing with a life of an animal that cant tell them what is wrong.
