My Daughters Maltese Had 3 Puppies...

last night, and she tells my 5yr old grandson was fascinated watching, and helping clean them up. :-)

The only problem is she is ignoring them at the moment, and all she wants to do is go back to her usual bed. Will see what happens today.

Is this her first litter?

I think that we assume that animals will be automatically maternal as its 'nature'. A bit like all human females being good mothers (not!).

I hope that mum and babies are reunited and they can start guzzling away.

Can I suggest that you talk to the vet about this and have a plan B ready? (apologies if she has done this) pups chill and dehydrate quickly and feeding equipment and appropriate formula may not be quickly available if things get risky.

Make sure they are kept warm if mum is leaving them - and that she is 'topping and tailing' them i.e. licking their faces and bums after feeds to stimulate them to go to the loo - if she is not, use a warm wet flannel to gently rub them and it makes them wee and poo. Hope she is feeding them ok.

Has she been check by the vet to make sure there are no more puppies to come?

My daughter has moved her usual bed next to the pups bed, and keeps putting her with them to feed if she moves.

She also is 'topping and tailing' them, and she says the mother is a bit better with them this afternoon.

She phoned a friend who is a vet and, she told her not to worry, and is going to pop around tomorrow. Thanks all.

The more they feed, the more the mother's maternal instincts kick in. Good luck puppies.

It's often not a good idea to help too much (unless necessary) at the birth, especially with the cleaning.

trt, how are the babies doing? Has mum decided to feed them? Reassure her that when her pups grown up they will leave home and her life can get back to normal.

Have you picked one for yourself yet? I usually prefer male animals, Merlin is the only female one that I have had. She is a beautiful cat but is really stupid and very vicious - guard dog material (but in a long haired cat).

woof - but added into the mix is the fact that she is a cat might do. She looks sweet and innocent.

She is more of an 'attack' dog/cat than guarding through loyalty. She bit the postman :-(

Anything that barks should, in theory, make a good guard dog.

They are all male, 1 completely white like the father & 2 have light brown patches like the mother.

She is taking more attention with them, but my daughter is keeping an eye out, and not letting grandson interfere to much, like touching them etc.

I have got a few photos, but all you can see is white/brown lumps, so when they are a bit bigger will send some.
