Problem With D Ring On Dog's Collar.
12 Answers
My little chap has twice caught his dew claw in the D ring. After the first time we bought him a narrower collar with a smaller D ring which we thought was OK. All clear until last night when it happened again. He wobbled across the floor towards me on 3 legs with his eyes begging me to help him.
Anybody had the same problem and if so how did you solve it? Thank you.

Wow thanks for all the info Lankeela. I don't want a leather collar, I want a softer material one. It needs to be narrow as well. It doesn't need a D ring if I get a harness for him. The annoying thing is he's off lead most of the time except when he's walking to the car. Even my dog walker lets all the dogs off lead every time she takes them out.
I will come back to you if I need to take you up on any of your kind offers. A big thank you.

This one makes just the nameplate that slips over any collar: Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
For me, a simple harness that clips over the dog’s back is much more sensible than any collar. These are made of strong webbing, probably nylon, with an O-ring on each side. Buckes allow for size adjustment. (There are full harnesses but they are, IMHO, over the top.) With a harness, there is, of course, no danger of compressing the dog’s windpipe, which a collar can do in extreme circumstances.
We only use ours for walking and going out in the car. There is an additional benefit when in the car as one of the side rings can be attached by a strap with a loop through which it is attached to a seat belt. In the case of a crash, the dog cannot go flying around the car and can’t be strangled which a collar might do.

Satprof thank you for your advice. I've thought about your post and I think I would prefer the harness and no collar as my dog also walks only to and from the car on the way to the park or Downs. Hopefully I'll find what you have described in Pets at Home where I can make sure it fits before I buy. If he'll keep still for long enough of course.
Ladybirder, I can thoroughly recommend Perfect Fit harnesses. They come in three parts, each part comes in different sizes so you really do get a perfect fit.
And if you order the wrong size of any of the bits you can return it and they send the right size.
It has a D ring on the back where the lead goes and which, as has been said, you can clip a small strap to in the car so it acts like a safety harness. Our dog never travels in the car without being safely secured this way both in the boot and on the back seat.

Thanks Vagus. I'm the same with J, he's always tethered in the car. If he wasn't he would be out after me like a shot. All I really need to do is not be such an idiot and take off his collar immediately when we get home.
Just in case I forget I have decided I will go with theprof's solution
