Why do owners give there dogs pigs pancreas? How would the dog benefit from them?

This is used in the treatment of a condition that is frequently found in GSD's (but also in other breeds) called Pancreatic Insufficiency. It makes them very thin and unable to make use of the food given to them. There are drugs that can be used, but the use of the pigs pancreas is a commonly used alternative. It can be bought direct from abbatoirs, or some firms now produce it in a more easier to handle (!) form.

Can you give it to them if they do not have this condition? The reason I am asking is that my dogs littermate has just been diagnosed with EPI (which I have just realised is Pancreatic Sufficency), and I have read that my dog could be a suspect carrier, My dog is showing none of the symtoms, his poo is ok, I have kept my dog lean and to the minium weight I can get away with because of his HD, his weight is maintained at 34-36kg, I have spoke with my vet about the possibity of my dog also having EPI, but again he is showing no symtoms, and he is definetly not a greedy eater.

Anyway forget the life story, can you give it to them just in case, or could I cause more problems?

I have just read the link, how disgusting does it sound, don't think I would be able to give it to the dog, I'm gagging typing this.

But would still like to know if it would be any benefical to my dog.

It is no different to feeding them other forms of 'offal' i.e. liver, kidney, heart, but none of these should be fed to excess.

I think you would know if your dog had a problem, you would be noticing a severe drop in weight, and I believe this happens at an early rather than later age, many young Shepherds suffer from this and their owners do not realise what the problem is, and some never put on any weight from a very young age. I am talking really thin, not just lean.

My vets not convinced, I'm not convinced he has it, but knowing my luck recently.

I gonna give him half of one weekly (i'm gonna try to give it to him, without throwing up), see how he goes, I have been reading that its also fantastic for the coat.

I have been to my local slaughter house (and yes I bursted out crying) and I have Pigs pancreas, and yes I have managed to cut it up and give my dog raw meat

I am so proud of myself

Do you realise how bad it smells,

My dog nearly took my hand of for it, yuck yuck yuck yuck yuck this could make me a veggie

and apparently I was told today that I could give it to my kids, gagging again
