i have been quoted 10 a day for housing our hamster over our holidays? The bloody thing is asleep for 22 hours a day! How can people justify charging so much?

People can charge whatever they want, it's up to you wether or not you pay for it, that's all. Ultimately they are providing a necessary service (you can't leave the hamster home alone) so they are in a position to be able to charge more. But considering it's such a low-maintenance pet, can't you find a friend or relative who will look after it?
10 a day!?
If you lived near me i would say bring it round and i would look after it :)
There is a girl local to us, she charges 7 per visit, but if you are away she also does stuff around your house, opening closing curtains, lights on and off, giving animals medication if needed, cleaning out, bringing in post, watering plants.
I paid less than that per day for my cat. Try boarding kennels or catteries - sometimes they have the facilities for looking after little furries too.
Put an advert in your local vets or pet shop - someone will probably jump at the chance to look after it for a couple of quid a day. Also try your local animal rescue - they would probably be glad of a bit of money to help keep their rescued animals.
lol, im still laughing at the comment.....The bloody thing is asleep for 22 hours a day
