I wouldn't recommend putting a goldfish in, in order to be happy and healthy each fish requires a minimum of 10 gallons.
I'm not a big fan of bowls for fish of any kind to be honest- personally i'd say get a good tank (really cheap on Ebay) with a filter included.

I would go for a small shoal....maybe 6-8, of white cloud mountain minnows.
These are a small, peaceful sub tropical fish that will be more than happy at room temperature. They come from small streams in the white cloud mountains in China and some people have kept them in ponds outside all year round quite happily.
Put some plants in with them and they might even breed !!!

Hmmmm, depends, re Betta front. You shouldn't put male Bettas together in a tank and they shouldn't be with other 'fancy' tailed fish and they see those as male and will attack them.
However, if your bowl is sizable, there's no reason why you can't put a male Betta on it's own in there, they don't need filters. Worth looking into as I have Betta's myself and they are truly stunning.
