how did my fish escape

I was sitting there today and when i looked over 1 of my daughters goldfish was lying next to the fish bowl. Unfortunately I was to late to safe it, but when my daughter asked me what happened i didnt have the answer. Plz help.

Apparently they jump at flies, we had a few fish that jumped out of their tank fortunately we always found them in time. Once we had the fish tank on the kitchen work surface and one fish jumped quite a way and later that day we found it swimming in the washing up bowl, which had 3inch of water in it.

Awww Tatty55, that's a shame.
Not sure why they do it, but my parents found my brother's goldfish down the back of his chest of drawers after a day out (so too late to save it). Poor thing.
