Hairs

Hello , I have just hoovered up again and it never ceases to amaze me how my dog sheds. I have enough hairs to have sat and knitted up a whole litter .
She gets out and she gets groomed but I am surprised she isn't bald by now . Her coat is shiny and healthy looking, so please tell me , do you dog owners have the same problem?

Oh yes. I have a 11 month old crossbreed, he's short haired but its so dense its untrue! He has moulted since we got him at 7 weeks and is getting worse. I groom him twice a day and bath him about every fortnight, my carpet and clothes are forever covered in hair. He also swims in a lodge daily which doesnt help his coat at all and takes forever to dry! He's brindle but weve noticed he has lost a few big stripes on his back, must be his summer coat (of I have groomed them out!)

Hi...this might work for and might not....a few years ago I had this problem and double so...due to my two dogs.When out on our daily walks I use to talk to an old chappie and i was talking about dog hairs ect,he told me to put a good spoonful of margarine on their food,thinking Id give it a go but having much faith in it , I gave it a try.Well....the dogs still loose hair but I must admit not nearly as much as before I started using it.My dogs are oaps now and Iv done this for years,I find their coat is healthy, shiney and hairs are modert in loss.So why not give it a try it might work for you.....good luck

Max is a 6 year old GSD & he alway seems to be casting, I was told when I had my first GSD to give him a spoonful of a good quality cooking oil with his meal & that would help & tho I've never noticed any reduction in casting all my dogs have had great, healthy coats. As you say bigmamma it's amazing that they have any hair left with all the grooming they need

This year seems to be worse than ever with the fluctuating temperatures, they don't seem to know when to take their coats off and when to keep them on. As I show my dogs, when they first start to moult I desperately try to keep the coat on by not brushing too much, but then it reaches the point of no return and I bath them and give them a good brush to try to get out as much as possible in one go.

Margerine in their food a couple of times a week will help, or vegetable oil, even a tin of pilchards or sardines in oil once a week will help the coat condition, and the new one to come through.

I adopted/was adopted a long haired cat in February, she was 18 months old.

When I got her she had a massive ruff that looked like a big scarf around her neck. It must have been uncomfortable, but it has all now fallen out for summer.

I groom her daily and end up with a lot of hair and I, too, have wondered why she isn't bald.

Her brother, from the same litter, is smooth coated and barely seems to moult at all.

The worst thing is that she is not very patient when I am grooming her - she is short tempered at the best of time. Her brother is a 'laid back surfer dude' kind of cat, but she is definitely into 'girl power'.

I will certainly take that tip on board and put either marg or oil of some sort in her food a few times a week . Does the cod liver oil you can buy for dogs do the same trick?
She is a 48 kilo black labrador so has heaps of hair !!!
She gets sardines about once a month , I may give her that more often now too. :-) xx

Sorry you cats not very patient wolf, but I never have any touble with Max, in fact he loves being groomed. I normally groom him while on his walks & as soon as he sees me get his comb out he runs up & lies on his back while I do his tummy, then he stands as good as gold while I do the rest of him

bigmamma...I use the margarine on every meal ,with a Lab I think you will have to boost with oily fish ect.

paddywak , my dog likes to be groomed too , I just have to say brush and she gets up and runs to where it is. :-) x

Cod liver oil is ok, but its probably cheaper to buy vegetable oil from the supermarket.

You could try getting her used to being hoovered - some dogs love it.

i have 4 dogs and they all shed to some extent but my bulldog is the worst.He really should be bald by now. He just has to brush past you and he leaves half his coat on you. This is with daily grooming dread to think what he would be like if i left him longer. He goes all sleepy when he is brushed nothing says i love you like a 5 stone snoring bulldog

hahaha the hoovering thing really tickled me! I have never though of that but it seems so simple, i'll be trying that tomorrow (Vince wont be thanking anyone for that!)

Hi , lankeela , I have that in the house already so I can give her some tomorrow.
Funny you should mention hoovering as I found quite by chance 2 years ago that she loves it . At my sisters home she got her hoover out and my dog went and sat in front of her and my sister did laugh when I said she was waiting to be hoovered. Now she hoovers her dog too. There is a special pet adapter for hoovers but our pet shop says for the money it is no better than the normal nozzle. :-) xx

I brushed my Border Collie everyday and he still left a load of fur on the carpet, he died in March and my wife cried 2 days later cos there was no fur to clean up with the vacumn.
Please don't worry about it.

Awww , astondog love , that is poignant. I feel for you ,sorry to hear that you lost your dear pet. It is true that although we complain about their hairs we would search the place for the last ones we could find if our pet was no longer with us. I remember when my sisters dog passed away and weeks later we found one of her hairs and were delighted !

yes i know what you ar going through i have 2 border collies and an akita and ther is hair every where i went to thepet shop and got a bottle of MOULT + COAT i find that it is really helpful it helps to stop excess hair loss and helps keep ther coats healthy , hope this helps , goodluck
