Hello all, I was wondering if it was possible to stop a rooster crowing. I have an Australorp and he is only just starting to crow and I don't want to give him away or sell him.

In my experience, there's no way to shut him up! (unless you keep him constantly in the dark and I'm sure you wouldn't do that!) I've got several cockerels and they all crow as soon as first light hits (I once had a bantam who crowed at midnight!). As someone said, "You can't sneak the dawn past a cockerel!" You'll get used to it! K xx
The syrinx muscles can be severed and cauterised by an experienced vet, but this will be quite an expensive operation. A complete general aneasthetic will be required and all species of birds are infamous for popping their clogs under aneathetics.

Why bother getting rid of it? The crowing is something that is easy to get used to. A few weeks and you [and your neighbours, if that's what you're worried about] will sleep right through it.
