My dog is really not very well and I am really worried about her. She is 11 now and last week she started to go off her food, not too unusual as she is a fussy eater. But on monday she just layed around all day.wouldnt even look up at you. And not eaten anything. Took her to the vet who said she did have a slight temp. and her back end was sore to touch. so took blood tests. gave her two injection in one antibiotics. The test showed raised white blood cells and antibodies, which showed an infection of some sort.Since then she hasnt eaten, not even fish or fresh chicken. not really drinking much when she does have a drink she drinks a lot.Have given her antibiotics twice a day.but still no better.very lathargic and was sick today but didnt even get up.We have another appointment tomorrow night with the vet.Has anyone else had these symptoms with there bitch.?

Has she been spayed? If not could be pyometra, although I can't believe the vet wouldn't have picked that up. Antibiotics sometimes take a few days to kick in. Could be either Addisons or Cushings, although they would not make her sore in one particular place, and she would be losing weight. Drinking a lot could mean problems with her kidneys. Try giving her the liquid food that they give to invalids, and some Lectade in her water. Let us know the outcome with the vet.

Thankyou Lankeela, Yes the vet did mention pyometra as she hasnt been spayed. The blood tests came back and kidney and liver was ok. She had Hepetitis 18 months ago. so that was on my mind. We have sachets to mix with water for her but she will not touch it, she wouldnt drink a thing so I changed it to just tap water and she drunk over a pint. If she is no better when she sees the vet he said she may have to stay in for few days so they can put her on a drip.I really pray it will not come to that ,maybe tomorrow morning she will have picked up after antibiotics for 72 hours.I will let you know. many thanks
lilacben I can't help at all there, sorry, but I just wanted to pass on my best wishes to your girl, and hope she is better soon.

Thankyou Leelapops for caring. Amber is still not eating or drinking. My daughter and grandson tried to get her to eat some chicken a while ago and have a drink but she just turned her head away. She did have a couple of sips of water. So will have to wait until 6.20 until she sees the vet.
Fingers crossed for your girl. Hope its just some minor infection, although if it is pyometra they will most likely spay her and that will prevent it happening again.

Have just got back from the vets. He decided to do a scan and was concerned about a solid mass he could see by her colon ,think he said something about liver. Anyway he has kept her in tonight on a drip and tomorrow he will do X rays to see if he can see anything on it better, other than that is opening her up and have a look. Poor little girl would hardly drink anything today just a couple of sips, so at least I know the drip will do her good. She was so good bless her she just walked into the cage and layed down. I stroked her and she didnt even look up.wIll ring in the morning and see how she is.
so sorry to hear your old lady is not well ,,i know how you feel we faced this back in april, all i can say is try and keep your chin up and it might not be as bad as you fear my thoughts are with you do let us know how you get on
Its never easy when you have to leave them, but at least she is in the right place. Everything crossed for her.
lilacben - hope she is ok - makes me so sad to hear of poorly dogs. Pickles is curled up here with me getting extra tickles - hope things work out for you.
Hope everything is OK.

If the vet starts talking about the Spleen (it is very close to the liver) then things could be OK. Dogs can live without a Spleen. I had a GSD that had similar problems to what you describe, she vomited one day and on examination by the vet he felt a mass in the area of her liver. They suspected that it may be the liver or the spleen. If it was the liver it was a poor outlook and they were not hopeful. They operated and found that the spleen had massively swollen and twisted on itself. They removed it and she recovered after about a week. What was supposed to be a half hour operation took two hours.

So if they start talking about the spleen things might be OK.

Take care - we all know how awful it is to be sitting by the phone waiting for news.

Thankyou all for your kind words. I phoned this morning to see how she was and they have had her on drips all night. Tried to offer food but she wouldnt touch anything. The vet is going to x ray when he finshes surgery. And he may have to operate and see what the problem is if x ray doesnt tell him anything. I have to phone again at 2.00 .Have loads of ironing to do but just can't get on and do it, its just the waiting isnt it.! I feel so useless sitting here.Still heres hopeing ah.!
Fingers (and everything else) crossed!

The waiting is awful - you feel so helpless not being able to do anything. If you are anything like me you will be on the phone dialing at two minutes to 2.

Its no help at all to you - but she is in the best place possible.

Let us know how it goes.
Good lck lilacben - I am rooting for you x
Any news - just logged in and this was the first thread I came to.

Hi again, Thankyou again for messages you have sent. Well yes I was on tender hooks coming up to 2 so phoned just before. Sorry but have only just been able to come on line. Anyway the vet spoke to me again and said he had operated and had taken her womb out. The xray didnt show much more than the scan so he decided to go in and see. He said usually the womb is filled with liquid pus but Amber's was thicker. He looked around and everything else was ok except for her spleen. He found a nodule in the spleen.I asked about taking a biopsy from it but he said that he could had it been on an edge but not from the middle as the spleen can haemorage (sorry not spelt right). So he has left it and will keep an eye out now for any other signs. and then he will have to operate again. She was just coming round and he is keeping her in again tonight so he can keep her on drips ans painkillers.I have to phone tomorrow morning to see if she can come home. I am feeling a bit better now but still worried .
Just seen this thread lilacben. I would just like to add my very best wishes for Amber. I know how awful you must feel. You have done your very best for her. Take care. x
so glad she made it through the op hopefully that was the problem and she will be on the mend now .a chap down the road had this with his old girl last year it took a while for her to recover but she is back to her old self now and full of beans. make sure when you bring her home they give you plenty of painkillers for her. hope when you post tomorrow she will be home with you .Ruth
Phew lilacben I hope everything improves after your girl's surgery. I am thinking of lovely Amber tonight, please keep us updated. xx
more wags and sniffs from Pickles and hope she is feeling betetr soon x
my best wishes for amber, fingers crossed for you. lots of love.... madboutcats..xxxx
