Pedigree without papers

hi there, i agredd to pay �500 for a chihuahua pup, whom i collected today. when i went to pay the lady, she showed me a letter from the kennel club which stated that my pup could not be registered because the mother not yet 12 months old.
she gave me a discount of �100 or the option of re-registering with her next litter, at least i think that was the second option. so i gave her the �400 and agreed to having no papers, as i'm not planning on breeding him.
my friends have now told me mi' was crazy to pay that kind of money for a dog which is technically now not a pedigree - altho i know he is for a fact.

what should i do? ask for more of a discount , go with the registering him with the next litter or just leave it?

When we got our dog we asked for his pedigree papers and the man tore a piece of paper out of a notebook and wrote on it:
Mother= Tinker
Dad= Patch
Brother= Spot
Sister= Lucy

He has no more pedigree that a Heinz 57 !

Anyhoo....I wouldn't have thought you'd be able to argue this matter further with the breeder seeing as you've already handed the money over and taken the puppy.

Maybe your best bet would be just to leave it as a lesson learnt that you could have got a pup/ young dog from a rescue centre with just as much dodgy parentage that didn't cost half as much as that.

Registered chihuahua pups sell upwards of �800.

Your dog is still a pedigree chihuahua (provided both parents are pure chihuahuas) - he just isn't KC registered.

yes, i've seen both parents.
i have no doubt that he's a pedigree and the lady i bought him from lives locally and is very genuine, so i know she's not tried to rip me off.

and boo, my last dog was a rescue dog who was a lovely wee thing but had behavioural problems. i worked so hard with him for over a yr and loved him to bits but his nervousness got the better of him one day a few months back and he ended up biting me quite badly, so i had to give him back to the rescue place.

If you just agreed to buy the dog then it is fair enough, but I suspect that the agreement was for you to buy a pedrigree which by its very description can reasonably be expected to be accompanied by registration papers.
It is evident by the lady showing you the letter that she must have tried to get papers for it. So yes, you probably have been ripped off.
You should not have handed your money over if you were not happy, it may be too late now.

Registering the dog with the next litter is not only immoral, it is probably illegal and I would stay well away from this 'breeder'.
And good on that Kennel Club for refusing to register pups from dogs under one year old.

she's a genuine lady yet she bred from a bitch under one year old and is now suggesting that she should fraudulently register this pup with her next litter!!!!!
Do you have any actual proof that the pup is of the breeding that she says it is? have you looked into the health of the parents (CHi's do have problems)

I am afraid I would be reporting this breeder to the Kennel Club. So many people come on here and moan about pedigree dogs and breeders yet the genuine responsible ones try to do their best and someone like this gives us all a bad name. The Kennel Club are right in not registering a litter from a bitch under 12 months (or over 8 years incidentally) and this woman is obviously planning on breeding further litters.
You may well have a very nice dog pup but her ethics are definitely dodgy. Problem is she will get away with it again unless someone does something. Registering the pup from a future litter is against all Kennel Club rules, and she would be banned from registering any dogs if the KC found out.

I agree with the above, while ever these people get away with this sort of money making mentality they will continue to do so.She needs reporting a.s.a.p.No thought to the breed or health just plain money making.g.

well, to be fair to the woman, she said she didn't realise she'd made the mistake, and it was the first time this has happened to her. she's had chihuahuas for 10 yrs and been breeding them the past 2 or 3 years i think.
she said she was still learning. but i can't help but think that i'm payin for her mistake, cuz i don't think she'd get �400 off someone for a chi with no papers. only i had seen him when he was 3 wks old, and hah been to see him regularly, so had a bond with him, so i didn't think much of it. it was only when i got home and mentioned it to a few people that got me wondering.
and i may add that she kept my dog's 2 female litter mates to breed them with a new pup she'd bought from another breeder, but obviously she can't register them properly either!
i dunno what to do. i think she did just make a genuine mistake, i wouldn't like to report her...

She's really gone into it well then hasn't she, if she doesn't even know the rules for registering them. And got her next two bitches to breed from, hardly a hobby breeder. People like you buying her puppies means she won't have to bother about registering them. Bet you what you like she registers the other two as being from her next litter. I'd send a letter to the Kennel Club to warn them to watch out for her registering the next litter.

She may have made a mistake, but then she may be like the bloke we got our puppy from, who had an accidental litter between a Cavalier king charles spaniel, and American Cocker spaniel.

We saw so called papers of the parents, paid our �250 and it was only the next day that I spoke to my boss, and we realised her 18 month old puppy had also come from an accident litter, from the same bloke and my puppy has the same mum as her pup!

Strange that! Along with the fact that my Spaniel x Spaniel also looks very very very much like she is half terrier!

The breeder of your dog may have made a mistake, but she may also be saying the same to you as she has said to many others!

Sounds very suspicious to me. I would report her. At the very least it will save more under age bitches being bred. Let her argue her case with the authorities.
