Is it possible that my shih tzu is pregnant

Hi all

This is a bit sensitive but my girl shih tzu is in season. My boy shih tzu who was castrated at 5 months old managed to mate with her, they were tied together for a while and then she walked off as if nothing had happened, which I hope it hasn't.

The thing is that I thought that he would have no inclination or ability to do this as he was castrated 4 years ago as a puppy. Can anyone tell me if she will possibly get pregnant? I do understand what castration is so I would assume that if she did then the op must have not been done right - has anyone any experience of this.

Hi cheeky teddy. I am not a vet but castration is nothing like a vasectomy. The whole of the testicles are taken away. So you cannot have the mistake of the tube not being snipped properly etc All things are possible they say -but this is high improbable.

A castrated dog may get tied to a bitch, but nothing comes of it (my dog did it, without result). Though castrated he's still capable of that much. Mine, curiously, looked totally blank when a bitch was courting him (she looked disappointed and puzzled!). Perhaps he suddenly remembered later what it was about!

In castration they remove the testicles, so there should be nothing to worry about if he was neutered four years ago.

Castration usually reduces their inclincation but sometimes a bitch in heat is just too tempting!

thank you so much for your advice. I feel so much better now. We had puppies earlier in the year and I do not want to repeat the experience!

She is off to be spayed at the next opportunity, I wanted to avoid her having another season but the vet wanted to wait.
