I adopted an 18 month old cat 3 weeks ago. I was aware she sould be kept indoors for the first few months in order for her to adapt to her surroundings. However she got out the window last night. I've searched all over but cannot find her. I kept the window open all night but as I live in an upstairs flat I'm not sure how she would get in even if she did find her way home. What are the chances of her returning home after being with our family such a short time. I'm worried sick.
Hi - I wouldn't worry. I have taken in many a stray and moved house five times with my cats and they always come home. I took in a stray in May and I only kept him in for three - four days unti the Vet had given him the once over and vaccinations. He went missing straight away and I was beside myself with worry and then he came home. All of my cats have caused me a couple of days of misery each, but all have come home. I now let my cats out the same day as I move in to a new house becase I can trust them to come home. Try and call her name and leave food outside for her. good luck - I know how how miserable you are feeling!
Thanks Toby99. I can't wait to get home and see if she is waiting outside. Couldn't sleep lastnight with worry. I know her last owners had recently moved and they let her out without a problem so fingers crossed.
Just another thought, do the former owners live nearby and, if so, have you checked round there or asked the former owners or any neighbours if they have seen her?
May be worth checking with local vets in case she has been reported found or putting some posters up.
One of my mum's went missing for days. She put a notice in the vets and got a call from a lady down the road to say he's been sat up her tree for days and couldn't get down.
Thanks for the advice about shaking a box with food in Jenna1978. I got home from work lastnight and there was no sign. I got the dog and took her for a walk shaking the tin with food in and calling for Tess. After 30 mins I decided to go home as no luck and as I rounded the corner I heard a faint jingle which sounded likes her collar. I called her name again and she came running around the corner straight to me. She must have been a bit shocked as wanted cuddles all night and kept following me around which isn't like her. I'm pleased she's home as was worried about how she would be with the fireworks going off around the street. Thanks for your help both.
Glad she's home. I bet it was a wonderful feeling when you saw her. She may cause you a few more sleepless nights, but at least you know she knows her way home now.
Thanks for all of your advise and support. She seems settled now. Keeping her in til after bonfire night now tho as don't want her having anymore scares but at least I know that when i do let her out again she'll be ok.
