me again, my word this puppy thing's hard work ! have gave him lot's of toys and he has a great time playing with them,but he prefers my socks and my husbands thermal vest ! should i get him something soft like a teddy or something ? or will this just encourage him to steal our clothes .

I have two dogs. When one was a pup, she ate the faces of any soft toys she could find, including the precious teddy I had had since I was born (60+ years ago).

I would buy him some cheap teddies from charity shops. They really do love things with faces!!!

One of my dogs still loves knickers and socks though and he's nearly 12 now!!

Well my last dog preferred socks for all of his 10 years!
I didn't give him soft toys simply becauseI didn't want to encourage him to destroy any of mine - thankfully he never did. Personally I stick to doggy toys, although my little spaniel does have a wooly dolly that I knitted, he took a shine to her when she fell out of a cupboard. He doesn't play with her but just moves her about sometimes. I think he thinks she needs a change of scenery. :o)

my neighbour had a patterdale, very sweet but very much a handful.

You can but hope that the pup will prefer a soft toy to socks and underwear, but it'll almost certainly be a forlorn hope!LOL If your lucky he'll take both.
We had a GSD that used to raid the laundry basket.She'd carefully pick out my mother's underwear and carry that off ! Another GSD used to contentedly chew the heels out of dirty socks.The Yorkie here is invariably the culprit if my underwear, awaiting the wash, disappears.It'll be in her basket, with her sleeping on it.
Sadly for us, the dog likes the smell of its human companions, and takes this enthusiasm to extremes, picking whatever smells of the greatest interest.

thanks everyone,yes lottie he is a wee cutiebut i dont know much about patterdales and reading about them just makes me scared ha ha ! he was abandonded and is about 8 months so we have no history ,I have a 14 year old dog who we got from a rescue centre at 8 years old and he has never took anything he was not meant to ,he is an angel ! dont think i'm goin to be so lucky this time

The thing is that Patterdales are working terriers and are extremely intelligent and need to be kept occupied. They are basically ratting dogs, like Jack Russells. They need firm handling and need to know who's boss or they can become really difficult.

They need loads and loads and loads of exercise!!!! You will be so fit.

yeah i no i'm shattered he's not ! even after his last big long walk at night he has a mad half hour running up and down stairs like a maniac x

Hello weecoffeecup , nice to meet you , I have a 14 week old puppy JRT and he's a real handful too . He also runs off with the smalls so I've had to make a point of keeping them way out of his reach . The only trouble with that is that he's now started destroying the books on the bookcase !!!

hi bigmama, I'm glad it's not just me, I paid 30 pounds for a bed for him today and he thinks it's a toy ahhhhhhhhh! how you dion with the toilet training

Oh my goodness , the toilet training !!!! lol.....he gets out often , gets lots of praise for doing it outside , and yet can then come in and christen the sides of his crate , or leave me a deposit just before I settle to a meal ...yuk . He seems to have so much in him , I don't know where it comes from . He has some clean nights in his crate and will go outside when I take him out at 6.15 am . Last thing at night I make a point of taking him out to the garden . He does have deposits in his crate in the morning that he must have done before I get up . I do hope he grows out of that real quick . The problem is he's just too darn cute :-)

Our spaniel is two and a half and still steals the socks...out of the drawer too if its slightly open..............he also takes the socks off my nephews feet!!!!

He does it for attention so i usually leave him (depending on whose socks they are)

Last night he made of with a mouthfull off the airer/drier so i left him as he just wants me to chase him.............I wrapped some pressies then went into our bedroom and he was flat out asleep on the bed with a mouthfull of socks..........

All i can say weecoffeecup is watch them chewing soft materials in and you don't let him chew yours he will be confused - i have just purchased a book called its me or the dog from off the tv written by Victoria Stilwell and its a great read. She explains all about how they interpret living in our HUMAN world and what to make of the things we do and say I recommend it...........anyhow a KONG toy is the best..........give pup less tea then stuff a kong toy with treats and let him get stuck into it. Very tough rubber they are and so far Jarvis hasn't managed to even put a hole in it.
