I have always used an external filter. I currently run a Fluval 305 external pump and my water clarity and quality has never been so good.
why do you keep having to buy a new filter? what happens to the ones you have?
Yeah you shouldn't be going through filters like that, a fluval should last AT LEAST 10 years. As mentioned, the externals are good....i too use a fluval 305 and a Tetratec 1200 on my 48 x 15 x 18 and both are superb. I use an Interpet 4 on my 4 foot guppy tank and that's ok although it does need cleaning every 2 weeks.

I would add I have had my aquarium over 20 years and my first Fluval lasted about 15 of those. I broke the last one being a bit heavy handed trying to get the impeller out. But it is the drive (if that is the right word) not the impeller that is broken. I see the new Fluval external filters are easier to prime.
I got my fluval 305 from here http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk/ for about 30 second hand. Always worth a look for second hand stuff.
