Kitten being sick

My friend has just told me that her kitten is being sick and has white stuff around his mouth. She said that he has been eating stuff out of the bin, (not sure what kind of stuff).
I have suggested that she gives him water for a little while just to see how he goes and if there isn't any change, then see a vet.
Does anyone know what this might be or does she need to take him to the vets asap?
