Dog Breeding

We are considering offering our male black lab as a Stud Dog. He is a Sandringham Labrador.

He is Kennel Club Registered and we have his full Pedigree etc.
Are there any documents we need, or protocols we have to go through?

Is there any endorsements on the pedigree? (eg not to be bred from etc.).

He will also need a Hip Score Certificate (preferably low score), Elbows Scored and a Clear Eye Certificate.

Have you ever shown him? Most people like to make a dog up to Champion level before using him at stud. A Field Trial Champion is also a good thing to have.

There are no endorsements from Her Majesty on his pedigree. His dam was Hip scored. We have never shown him and although he has many Field Trial Champions in his pedigree, he is not one.

Don't bother, love, there are many many thousands of unwanted dogs around as it is. All you'd be doing is signing the death warrant of some of them by allowing your dog to hump some bitch for a few quid.

Get him castrated, do the unwanted dog population a favour.

Do you know Paraffin, I just knew when I posted this innocent question I'd get some sn*tty nosed little "person "with a huge chip on their shoulder giving some snide comments because my dog is from Sandringham!!!

I think I'll give up using this site, as it seems to me that unless you are some downtrodden oik on the dole ,who can't spell or punctuate properly, you've got no chance of receiving answers that are not peppered with comments like yours.

Paraffin, you are of course entitled to your opinion, everyone is. It was the tone, and the use of the words "love" and "hump" that I found so offensive.

You have no knowledge of my bank balance. Maybe "a few quid" would save me from losing my house. Maybe I want another puppy to carry on his line when he dies. We have owned 8 Labradors during my lifetime and love the breed.

I asked a simple question - since the Queen is a dog breeder what do you think of her? Do you class her in with your statement that all dog breeders are the scum of the earth and only in it to swell their bank balances?

The Queen breeds Corgis and Labs. They are registered with the Kennel Club. Also remember the Dorgis? Susan was the foundation bitch for the Corgis and all the queens pets are decended from her.

Surely that proves that not all dog breeders are in it for the money - and some can actually be animal lovers?

As we all know, Her Majesty is only in dog breeding for the money. The same applies to her breeding racing pigeons and racehorses.

Paraffin seems to think that anyone who takes their bitch to a dog is set upon profiteering and is on a par with puppy-farmers (who wouldn't bother with any stud dog. They'd have their own dog). and the stud dog owner is an accomplice in this activity. {Why is that Paraffin ? or am I wrong? ] I don't know anyone who makes anything much from breeding, but then I've only been incidentally associated with dogdom for over 50 years

The practical advice has been given above. It does not necessarily follow that nobody would want a stud dog who isn't a champion. Some people (I'm one) are after a particular bloodline when they look for a pup and would not automatically refuse a sire because he hadn't won, provided the pedigree was right. That said, nearly everyone else looks for a champion and it's always going to be the champions that get the business. .
