Hi, one of my chickens has started to drop her tail and seems to sit down a lot during the day. She's been laying and has a normal appetite but doesnt seem herself. She had a prolapsed vent a few weeks ago which I treated with preparation H and everything was fine a few days later. I saw her recently lay an egg standing up!! It had a very soft shell which one of the chickens ran off with whilst she and the other 2 ate the yolk and white. Has anyone any ideas?

I guess the hen sits down because it is in pain. You'll have to decide when the time has come to put her out of her misery.

With a prolapse all the muscles that usually press the egg down the oviduct are sprained. She might feel better when the egg has passed but will go down again when the next egg comes.

Is a visit to the vet out of the question? I know, it is costly.
