Hello.
I have heard that Spot on is the best treatment for fleas and ticks on dogs, is this right?
Also I have seen that there are two different types one which you need a prescription for and one that you dont, why is this? Can anyone recommend a good one?
Also recommendations for worming tablets would be appreciated, max always seem to be sick after taking his.

Thanks

Do you mean Bob Martin Spot on or Frontline Spot on?
Question Author
I didnt know there were different ones
I use prescription Frontline spot on flea and tick treatment on my Alfie and never have any problems with fleas. As for worming tablets - when we first got him he had been given Milbemax worming tablets which we continued to get from our vet, however they changed to Drontal as they said they were cheaper and just as effective. Our Alfie was sick once after having a worming tablet it was our fault as he was off his food and I completely forgot that it should be given after food and as such it obviously irritated his stomach and came back up. We are always careful now to make sure he has eaten before giving it to him. BTW what breed is Max because I know some worming tablets shouldn't be given to collies, can't remember the reason why off the top of my head.
I have used Frontline for a long time(non prescription)i buy it from vetuk.co.uk, i use it all year round, every month.I have cats.
Spot on (or pipette) is how it is administered. The active ingredient in Frontline, spot on or spray is fipronil, which is a pretty effective flea and tick treatment.
We keep our dogs on milbemax because it is also effective against heartworm. This is starting to be seen on the south of England and I understand that id is common in France and Spain.
What does the vet say about your dog vomitting?
collies can have problems with fipronil
Milbemax wormer can be lethal to some collies, although you can now get them tested to see if they are ok. I will put a link to it. I use Drontal wormer, and for fleas use Frontline (spray) which is only available from vets. I would not use a spot on, because some don't kill fleas, only stop the eggs from hatching. They contain growth inhibitors and stop them breeding, and I am not confident of how this would affect the animal as they are absorbed into the bloodstream.
lankeela I thought the spot ons went and sat in the dog's oil glands, and wasn't absorbed into the bloodstream?
my cat has Frontline Spot On. he hates it!

I saw they were selling it at the pharmacy in Sainsburys.
Not 100% relevant but we used to use Stronghold on our cats, which was fine and a monthly spot-on. Our vets have changed to Advocate which they say is better value for money, but it's very runny and less easy to spot on. Anyone else used this?
We get worming tablets from the vets, they sell individual ones so you dont have to buy a packet and Frontline from Asda (or Boots) its much cheaper!
Thanks for the link, most of them are absorbed into the bloodstream, and although these are not I would still use the spray, but only if needed, not as a regular treatment like the monthly spot ons.
