Cleaning water holder?

I have an aquarium and when I clean it out I use a 25lts plastic jerry can. It's gone mouldy and green at the bottom, was just wondering if I could use Milton to soak it, or will it be too strong and contaminate any clean water I put in there afterwards??

Don't use Milton, it will harm the fish.

I think that a kettle full of boiling water poured carefully into the empty jerry can will kill any algal growth. May have to repeat a few times and rinse thoroughly. Try to store it in the dark.

Yes ttfn the bottom has gone green, probably from leaving water in it, clean water mind but it's deffo got algal growth on the plastic. Any ideas? I know you can you bleach in minor concentrations but I just thought if it suits human babies it might suit my piscatorial babies!

dont use any chemicals or Milton - plain water only in tank. Use nylon tights if you can't find a nylon scrunch. The algae doesn't harm the fish and they do eat it, it just looks murky. Often th

Thank you once again the ABers Community, you restore what little faith I have left in humanity! I have just had an idea combining some of your answers! Gravel from my own fish tank (using the tights of Mrs daginge would probably not go down well!) added with a kettle of boiling H2o and violently shaken! I shall report in a short while!

daginge watch out for the H & S inspector. Do you have a length of chain - I always used that to clean out demijohns with plain cold water. Give it a darn good swirl and it should release the algae from the plastic. No need for mrs d to strip tonight - unless you know differently.........................

Many years ago my sister used Milton to clean out her fish tank. All the fish died. [:o(

She assumed that if it was safe for her wee baby, it'd be safe for the fish. Sadly, it wasn't.

I have a fish only marine tank and i have the same "problem" with my 5 gallon jerry cans. it's only algea and absolutely nothing to worry about.....just carry on doing what you do with the algea in the bottom of the can.
