Vets charges for tablets

Meg is a 15 year old border collie, she has thrown up every day, usually once a day for the last 2 years, we have learnt to live with this!!
However she is now eating very little, probably a third of what she normally has. I am coaxing her with chicken and other tasty bits but it is a struggle.
We've been to the vet's today and she has had bloods tests taken, should get the results tomorrow.
The vet gave me some new tablets to try her with, I've always found their fees very reasonable but today I was charged £39.20 for 6 losec tablets and £17.00 for 2 cerenia tablets.
I have no insurance and am perfectly happy to pay for any treatment/meds she needs but this seems a bit excessive. Could there have been a mistake?

Animal drugs are more expensive than the same drug in its human variety because of the licensing system. Hope your girl is ok.........but I am surprised that the vet has waited two years to do tests if you dog has been sick on a daily basis for so long.

Wolf, we did well earlier today, she ate everything, including tablets, tonight she has refused to eat and therefore has not had any meds.
Vet phoned this evening, said the blood test results were remarkably good for a dog of her age. She's asleep now, looks totally contented.
Mobilser, I take on board what you say about too much protien, for the time being I just want her to eat.

I do wish you well with Meg. Bless her. When I had my Newfi he suffered terrible with a skin condition in the hot weather. Ended up taking him to a specialist vet who got him right but at a tremendous cost. He showed me his invoices for the meds and he was selling them on to me at trade price, I only paid him for his consultations. One of the meds was a capsule twice daily which cost over £5 each, and that was over 12 years ago. I paid unquestioningly though I was amazed. So long as they get better, no price is too high :o) Fingers crossed for you all ♥

Jules, thanks for the answer, we've had numerous tests carried out over the last 2 years. I made a posting on here about it 6 months ago, I had answers from people that had pets which had vomited every day for the last 3 years of their lives, in other respects they were totally happy.

The little thug in my avatar is sick pretty regularly. It appears that eating twice as fast as a greedy Labrador makes cats vomit. ;-)

Hi missmeg, I don't know anything about dogs but my cat was sick every day and he was rapidly diagnosed with kidney failure (not uncommon with older cats). However that was 2 years ago - he takes a Fortekor tablet every day and is flourishing at the moment. I pay about £45 every couple of months for his supply, but I do have insurance - after the excess, I get it all back. Trouble is that the insurance costs approx £200 p.a. now as he's got older, but it's worth it when something like this happens. My insurance covers conditions for life whereas some of them will only pay out on a condition for say 12 months.

Tell you what really p*sses me off about vets? The vet does an injection and says he needs some tablets. The injection cost £20, no problem. the tablets cost £4, no problem. Then she wanted to charge me £5.50 for dispensing the tablets!!! After a lot of fuss I paid only for the injection and £4 for the tablets and left.

No doubt it will go on my bill next time but be 'hidden.'

Oh I do hope your baby will pick up soon,when they get to that age I don't think they digest the same as when younger.I know vets charge the earth,but what can we do when our beloved pets need them, so to speak.Hope all goes well with her..g.
