Hey there,

So Benji finished his antibiotics on Thursday. He's continuing having the Romilar solution three times a day but he just does not seem to be getting any better. I've been back to the vets three times now and each time he just tells me to keep on going with the medication and tells me that I need to be patient.

He's still coughing all through the night and in the daytime too. Im considering trying a different vet as I'm getting really worried that it's something more serious than just kennel cough. Maybe heartworm or something?! Do you think I should take the vet's advice and just be patient, or should I try another vet ASAP?

Thanks everyone

Rafferty you obviously have a doubt about your present vet so get a second opinion - that's what I'd do. (hope Benji gets better btw - give him pat from me)
Take him somewhere else for a second opinion, this has been going on a long time for such a tiny pup. This may not be your current vet's area of expertise, you are quite entitled to ask somewhere else.
I would go to another vet, see if you can find one someone recommends. It could be something as simple as an allergy, but it could be worms, problems with his trachea or a heart problem.

I went back to a different vet this morning and she was much, much more thorough. She has given me antinflamatories and more antibiotics for the cough. It's apparently difficult to prescribe for him as he is so small - he only weighs 1.4 kilograms. So I've got the new medicine for a week. If they don't help she's asked me to go back and he will go for an X-Ray. She suggested perhaps it could be that he has a malformed trachea, just as you've suggested Jules.

So here we go with plan C! I really hope this works. Will keep you all updated.
goodness he's lucky to have you!
I hope that he feels better soon. He is so young and so small and is at a point in his life where he should be off investigating smells, sounds and eating everything in his path.

hope Benji is showing some signs of improvement - it must be so hard for you with his being so small. Jamie Charlie and Holly send licks
