When we moved my Dad let the cat escape the very next morning. He'd only been in the house for about 8 hours but he didn't stray far. Just stayed around the garden and sniffed around for a bit before coming back in. My cat responds to the sound of his treats tub being shaked so maybe have some treats ready to encourage him back in.

thanks will try that
The problem is that the cat has probably not yet formed an attachment to you or your home. It might just go back to your friend's house.

I do hope that he settles down and you have a long life as a slave to your new boss.
3 weeks is the standard answer. butter is just a myth
I agree 2-3 weeks at the very least. He won't know where he is and doesn't know you very well. Take this time to make a fuss of him and develop a strong bond. And forget the butter it's an old wives tale. I hope you have a long and happy life together. Good luck.
yes a good few weeks is best unless he is chipped and you have managed to change tyhe registered address, yoiu couold get him chipped immediately and then if he does stray you might get him back
The CPL advise two to three weeks when adopting a new cat.
