This is a rescued Cairn terrier that I've owned for about a year. Anything I can do to stop it barking at the television?

Gently remind him that many 'experts' would tell him that he can't actually see what is on the TV...........
Other than changing channels, there is precious little you can do.

So, it's training me not to watch the racing...
Try distracting him with a treat or a toy is all I can think of. Does he bark all the time the TV's on?
Question Author
No. Only at pictures of dogs or horses. It also barks if there's barking sounds .
Is the dog barking at sounds or pictures? Mute the sound and see if he still barks - perhaps use the subtitles and see if he can read ,as well?
As they are in his territory, he's just 'sending them off'.....

It barks at miewing and barking noises. And also at the images. I wouldn't be surprised if it could read, but when the racings on I hope it can't read my thoughts
Until the last yr of his life my little lad (avatar) barked at everything with more than two legs...he was even unsure about animated animals so they got a minor telling off too. :o)
I lost him 3 weeks ago, I wish he was still here barking.
lol Saandy, he's been reading AB and disapproves of horse racing
Get yourself a 3D t/v & glasses for the dog then he/she can really live.Ron.
lol ron

My previous dog, a std poodle, loved horse racing & would lie down to watch it. Unfortunately he also loved the footy (he was rationed to a few minutes) but never got out of the habit of looking round the side of the tele to see where the ball had gone :o)
my dog only barks at the tv screen, when there is a collie on tv ?
My last cat used to lie on top of the TV and try and attack animals from that position. Some times all I could see was a paw and upside down cat head.
Ours run up to the screen and snuffle at the screen when they see animals on TV. Mainly other dogs, horses and cows. They do it even if there is no sound so they can definately see the images. They do occasionally look to find the creature if has run across the screen and off the picture. Thankfully they don't bark, only the occasional grumble if they don't like the look of whatever it is. It's the having to wipe all the dog snot marks off the screen that is main annoyance. I'm not sure what you can do to stop yours barking apart from praising him when he's quiet to try to encourage that behaviour instead.
