Can anyone suggest a good soothing shampoo for my cavalier king charles. He is highly allergic to dust mite and flea saliva. The only thing thats stops him itching is a steroid spray from the vets. (dont want to use this long term) Do human antihistamines work on animals? We are going away tommorow and not looking forward to all the scratching. I am going to bath him today with (hopefully) a soothing shampoo!! thanks julie
You can give dogs human antihistamine, but you may need to try several to find one that suits. I believe Atarax is popular with WHWT owners, who also suffer allergies, this is only available by prescription from your vet. Speak to your vet first who can advise dosage before self prescribing any human medication to your dog.
Try giving him some Evening Primrose oil capsules with his food.....its a great natural remedy for skin irritations, it worked great for my hound...as I didn't want to subject him to lots of steroids etc....hope it clears up and he finds relief from this miserable irritation.
When a border terrier of ours had dry and itchy skin a friend recommended fish oil (or oily fish and Vetsyme, a readily available food supplement . Worked well on her. Steroids by topical application like sprays dont have such bad effects as swallowed one but I think you are right not to rely on them too much.
hi our beagle has a half of a piriton tablet 3 times a day at this time of year as the pollen affects her eyes , the vet told us only to give her piriton and not to use any of the other allergy tablets
