Is there any truth in the rumour that seagulls explode when they are fed bicarbonate of soda or Alka-Seltzer?

No there is no truth. There was also an urban myth about not throwing rice at weddings because it caused birds to swell and explode!

I'm afraid I know some grown men in this Island community who have as small boys watched seagulls gorge on bread laced with bicarb, and the birds have done just that.
