I have a friend who has been starting to act odd since her husband passed away a year ago or so, she's got into the occult and gothic themes and lifestyle. Recently she told me she had bats in her attic which had got in through a gap under the gutter. She has now since blocked the hole so they can't get out and calls her "her pets" and is feeding them by bringing warm saucers full of blood from the butchers shop and she also buys various insects online ie. Moths and other flying insects to feed them and also baby frogs! Even though her attic is quite large and they seem well fed I can't help feeling sorry for the poor little mites as all creatures should have the option of freedom and spreading their wings. I have a feeling this is something to do with her loneliness and also to do with the "darkside" she has recently become involved in. If this is illegal I am also a little scared to tell the authorities as this could send my friend over the edge as she has been suicidal in the past. Please help advise me.

yes it is illegal to interfere with a protected species. Are you sure though she is doing this, have you seen it with your own eyes. If you are SURE then call RSPCA.
Taking this at face value - If you are in UK, it is an offence to interfere with bats, in any way.

Your friend needs to be told to let the bats live their lives.......and she needs to seek help to address the under-lying issues in her own life.
Warm saucers of blood? WHY?
That's exactly what I was thinking hc. What are bats going to do with saucers of blood?
'cos they is vampires, innit?
she obviously needs help - so do the bats - difficult one though shereeq - has she family you could contact?
also just about impossible from the butchers in the UK as even butchers who do their own butchering don't receive carcasses with blood in. The carcass is drained at the slaughterhouse then hung, any remaining blood would be congealed....I have given a "sensible answer but suspect the OP of a sense of childish humour.
She's feeding them saucers of blood...

I find it more amazing that vampire bats have flown all the way to the UK from the Americas to take up residence in your friends loft!

I suspect the bats are minuscule.... about as small as an thought in somebodies head in fact!

Woofgang yes I can confirm that I've seen this myself. Jackthehat and carmalee This is exactly what I've told her many times but she then goes on to say that their her only family in the world as she has no one and apart from me only has online friends on some of the gothic/occult forums she visits.
Apparently she keeps the blood on a really low heat to stop it congealing and puts in a saucer at night and they drink it or at least taste it as you can see the bats claw marks around the saucer in the mornings, she gets the drippings from the butchers tray woofgang.
I bet she has Bella, Edward, Jacob, Carlisle and Esme..........am I close?
you paint quite the picture shereeq...
Heating blood encourages it to congeal, for heavens sake!!

Off with your nonsense..........
Good morning, can I help you Madam.

Yes please. Can I have 1/2 pt of the blood from your trays.

Certainly madam. Have you got your own container?

This has to be a wind up!!
