Husky dog

my friend has got a Husky puppy and keeps being told she must keep it on the lead. This is the second one she has had who was always off the lead. Is there a law in force about it?

Not sure if it's law but I think dogs should be on a lead on a public highway and they do have to be wearing a collar with the contact details of the owner at all times, even if they are chipped. Personally I think it's rather irresponsible not to have control of your dog where it may run into the road and cause an accident.

If it's not a "general" law many councils have by-law stating that dogs must be on a lead in certain areas, however as rattyratgirl says responsible dog owners do it any way. Max for instance walks perfectly to heel on or off the lead but I always have him on the lead when walking by a road or in a strange area

It's generally advised to keep huskies on a lead because they are notoriously bad at returning when called and have a much greater prey instinct than a lot of dogs.

Are you sure the previous dog (and this one for that matter) are actually huskies, a lot of people get Malamutes and then say they have a husky because they look so similer but Malamutes are much better off the lead.

We have 3 huskies in our village and none are let off the lead because none of them come back. A shame for them really as they can never have a good run. I'm surprised that they don't seem to be able to be taught good recall from being puppies. I know Beagles are well known for this too but know one whose recall is brilliant as it was taught properly from a very young age. This site is very useful

She should always be in control of her dog. If it saw a cat on the other side of a road, could your friend control it or would it shoot across the road in pursuit of the cat. If so then she isn't going to have it very long.

I suspect its about it not coming back, many of the Spitz breeds are notoriously selectively 'deaf' when being called! There is no law about keeping any dog on a lead unless there has been a court order to do so, or its in an area subject to bylaws such as a beach at certain times or on a road etc. However it is common sense to only let a dog off in a secure place or where you are far from a road even if you have very good control. I cringe when I see dogs loose alongside roads - their owners cannot possibly know what could upset the dog such as a car back firing or another dog running out from behind a hedge or wall, and my biggest bugbear is those bl**dy flexi leads - I have seen a dog killed by a car when it shot out in the road when frightened by another dog.

I totally agree with Lankeela, especially with those flexi leads. One of my wolfhounds got tangled in one once, He was running up through the beach, playing with another dog when he ran into a very thin lead fully extended and couldn't see it, I knew something was amiss when this little tiny dog just appeared to get catapulted into the air for no apparent reason, I couldn't see the lead either, my poor Merlin was tangled in the stupid lead. If people taught their dogs to walk on lead and teach them re-call they wouldn't need stupid Flexi Leads. OK, rant over!!

Thank you all for your help. She does keep him on the lead on the highway,but lets him off in a safe place. He comes back every time she calls him started to train him very early. He is four months old
