do dogs sleep? I was recently overhearing these two women on the bus and they were arguing over whether dogs actually sleep like humans or do they just close their eyes and rest?

Of course dogs sleep and (from watching their paws and noses twitching) they seem to have some great dreams!

Some creatures exhibit 'unihemispheric sleep', where only half of the brain sleeps at any time. It's been shown that such sleep patterns are fairly common in birds but there's very little evidence to suggest that mammals (other, possibly, than cats) sleep in this way. Dogs seem to be completely 'zonked out' in the same way that humans are ;-)

My dog snores, twitches, makes strange whiney and slobbery noises and when I wake him he is totally befuddled - much the same as mr mac. My conclusion therefore is that they both sleep in much they same way :)

They sleep (and snore) but they will waken in a nanosecond if their is any chance of food being offered to them (or a strange noise or burglar).

I find that my two cats sleep much deeper than my dogs used to.

When my dog sleeps she is being chased by rabbits and if we ever were unlucky enough to have a burglat hse'd offer them the biscuit tin.

She sleeps and snores for the UK tho. Should be an olympic sport

Yup they do sleep. Well I think they do. Bobby snores, runs and yaps in his sleep..it's cute to see him doing so :)

When mine sleeps on the sofa he lays on his back with his feet up in the air...and snores terribly.

Yeah Craft, mine does the legs in the air thing, although it tends to just be the one. I like to think he's dreaming he's on Question Time :)

Max certainly sleeps. As I'm typing this he's laid with his head on my feet snoring his head off and doing that little twitchy thing dogs do in their sleep

My younger labrador Jess quite often lies on her back on the sofa and gallops along - I wonder if she's being chased or doing the chasing! But my belgian shepherd Isla goes from play mode into a deep sleep really quickly, and snores quite a bit too. But as soon as she's awake she's there! ready to do anything, like playing or eating! She is much the youngest though.

This is to Craft1948. We have a rescued cat. He was petrified by every sound when we first got him. He now sleeps on the sofa, on his back, with his legs in the air. I believe this is because he trusts who he is with and I feel very honoured and very pleased that he feels so safe.

YES! definetly. my dog curls up and makes a nest out of blankets he finds and snores , once i walked in early in the morning and he was still asleep, running in his sleep! i suspect he was having a nightmare and running away from something he needed a lot of comforting afterwards and wouldn't go in his bed for the next two nights and kept me awake with his very very loud snoring!

Bruno doesn't snore, but he does pass wind in his sleep, but only when he's asleep - strange !

Definitely.Lottie,my lab,lies on her back with her paws in the air,chasing rabbits,wagging her tail,making kind of little quiet barks,suckling and on the odd occasion,has howled...which scared me half to death! Yes my girl loves her bed.
