I would definitely say that pups seem to settle better & quicker if they can see & smell the family at night & you will be able to relax knowing that the pup is OK.

I would leave the older dog where it is used to being, and keep the pup in the crate until it's old enough to have more bladder control & safe enough not to get up to anything dangerous while you are all asleep.

I'd use a stairgate for a while until the pup is safe with the stairs on its own, they do tend to be cautious but there's always one that goes a bit too fast & lands in a pile at the bottom!

We were advised by our breeder (weimaraners) that it is fine for a puppy under six months to go upstairs, but that they should be carried down to prevent shoulder injury. Our dogs have always slept in our bedroom if they wish. (once adult they have the run of the house) When we got our first dog, my husband travelled a lot and the area we lived in was a bit dubious so the dog was for protection as well as companionship. I felt then and still do that if someone is going to break into the house, I don't want the dog shut away from "having a go" at the burglar and certainly not shut away from where it can protect me! PP is right, pups do seem to settle better when they sleep with the pack, housetraining is much easier and faster and the kitchen floor stays clean!!!
