I think I may have a water vole living in my garden - I live beside a very slow moving (often static canal) and have noticed small tunnels beneath the bird table - at first thought maybe rats had moved into the food source but this miorning have (twice) seen what looks like a water vole out on the lawn - have googled it and the signs are promising! - I do hope so.

I believe they are a protected species but are slowly making a comeback to the waterways of this Country. The quality of the water in your Canal helps, nie to see rsvp !
I know someone who lives in the country who has a water vole (or family!) under his lawn and flower beds. They are creating havoc - leaving the lawn so unstable its caving in. They don't surface and leave mounds of earth like moles and he can't do anything as they are protected.

thank you garner - I've only seen it twice, first thing this morning I almost stepped on it which is what drew my attention - a rat would never have let me get that close - then later on (and with glasses on!) I saw it in the same place and got a much better look -
