Heard once that you can tell if a dalmation is deaf by the patterns of its spots. Is this true, or was someone just pulling my leg?

I did hear that when Disney were filming the live action 101 Dalmations they had a problem with how to train all the dogs (and there were a lot of them) to do the right thing at the right time.

They decided to train them all to respond to ultra-sonic whistle.

Nobody realised that a good proportion of the dogs would be deaf and the result was chaos.

Do I take it from this then that deafness is very common in dalmatians, more so than any other breed, and if so why is this likely?
I know that a large number of dalmations are deaf (not all of them), but I do not know why this is.
i heard on the tv once that most white animals are deaf, weather its true or not i dont know.
