My Airedale Terrier had an operation on his rear left leg a few days ago. He just won't settle with a lampshade collar on which he needs to stop him licking
the wound.
We are having virtually sleepless nights. We have used DAP and Serene-UM liquid but he seems resistant to it. He paces around and won't sit or lie down.
Has anyone any ideas please? Thanks :-(

Two of my dogs have needed these at some stage in their lives, they both HATED them with a vengance and would not settle. Unbelievably Tara my last dog, actually hooked her paw behind it and flicked it off (don't ask me how!) and so I kept it off. I did the same with Bruno my dog now and I just kept a very steely eye on them. I made up a bed for them next to mine and watched them like a hawk and if I heard any licking, I stopped them immediately. It worked for me, but I realise it may not work for everyone.

Thanks for that - will try leaving the collar off and move his cage into the bedroom as he has had a cruciate ligament op and is banned from jumping for a while and I know he would jump on the bed. Here's hoping for a good night's sleep zzzzzzzzzzzz...........:-)
Good luck patricia !
Once had same problem .Got some ointment from vet it was supposed to be foul tasting so he would not lick wound to be honest cant remember if it worked or not .Have a wee word with vet .Dont suggest paying for it ask it as a favour ....

Thanks Weecalf, we have an appt on Monday at the vet's for his wound to be checked - will ask about it.
Valerian is very good, also rescue remedy seems to calm them down a fair bit. Also spraying a bit of "bitch spray", available from most pet shops, around the area, but not directly on the bandage or wound, can sometimes stop them wanting to lick it. Good luck! Hope he heals quickly.
What about not sleeping in the same room as your dog? He'll go to sleep eventually.
Try Procollar - you can order online and they deliver in a day or two.

Just had a look at those procollars, Lankeela. Thanks for posting that link. They look far more comfortable than the lampshade type ones. Will keep that in my favorites. When our Wolfies have to wear the normal lampshade / cone ones, they barely get through the door and have a dreadful time! This looks much better! Hugs!
I gave my dog some drops of Bach's Rescue remedy which settled her quite nicely.....however she got quite fond of the stuff and would open her mouth when she saw the bottle......I also use Rescue remedy cream for small cuts, abrasions and the like....my vet's bills have halved...
