They're returning to nest sites to pair & mate. The male is the most colorful. No babies now as they would have matured from last year.

Really, Tamborine? I wonder what the bloody great monstrosity is that’s usually taking their sparrows then, I was lead to believe that was a sparrowhawk? Saw it take a dove last year too, much bigger than this thing but didn’t have the camera to hand? It turns up periodically for a couple of days then disappears for ages?
I'll try and get a pic next time!!

Female sparrowhawks are bigger than males and can catch pigeon sized birds....I've seen one do it in my garden.

My answer related to the second bird described by the OP as he implies the bird is much bigger than would be expected in a female, be interested to see photos of that one... if the size difference is less significant I would agree a pair of sparrowhawks
