Dog pregnancy test

Further to Cristo's question about her possibly pregnant dog, it made me think whether you could use a pregnancy test on a dog ? That is if you could get it to wee on the stick.

Would a human pregnancy kit work for dogs ?

Pregnancy testing kits react to the hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG) which wouldn't be found in any species other than humans.

Maybe you need a pregnancy test that detects DGC.

I have to say to the person who said pregnancy test only work on humans as yes they do detect hcg were wrong in saying they only work on humans i do no they do work on monkeys as it has been proved in recent test if suspected pregnant but am sure they do not work on dogs as they will pee out the same hormone if or not they r pregnant but a blood test which is 100 per cent accurate will tell u if or not she is pregnant but u will have to get this done at the vets

i'm melanie and i use a human pregnancy test to see if my dog is pregnant , the first time she was not pregnant, a that time she was not covered , and test gave a negative result. the second time she was covered by a male and the was positive, she gave birth to 5 pups and also the third time it was positive ,and also covered, so i think that the pregnacy test for human works for dogs to , the venetarin said also to me the dog haven't got something like hcg and that the test wil also give an positive reaction when she is 2 weeks bleeding, but i havend tried yet,so thats how i think about the human test.

Well HCG and Dog CG may well have a similar shape (both mammalian) and the antibody test will not need the full CG molecule for binding. The antibody will recognise an antigen at a particular epitope and that small region may well be present in the Dog CG. There are many antibodies raised against a particular animal that correctly cross react with other species. PCNA works on yeast and up to man. So it depends on the degree of evolutionary conservation and expression of the antigen molecule in question. Sorry I am getting a bit technical but after 30 years with dogs and vet path I cant help it. When I breed with my springer (2007) I shall give it a go.
