Big black flies with dangling legs

What are they called? They are nothing like Daddy long-legs/Crane flies. They are very black and their bodies are about the size of a big bluebottle amd they have a large thick pair of black legs that dangle down. They are in the field behind our house in Hemel and last w/e in Suffolk when we went for a walk we were having to bat them out of the way with our hands.

Think they might be clegs,also known as horseflies.From what I remember,they can bite,so keep swatting them away!

No - I know horseflies. They are much browner and their bites really itch!
