What's the best bait for my mousetraps? I have four of them, of the style you see on Tom & Jerry. On the box they came in it said best was chocolate or peanut butter. I have no peanut butter, indeed I don't even know where to get it. So I cut the corners off some chocolate biscuits and armed said traps. I can still hear the mice scurrying around at night but they are not going near the traps.

Go to supermarket. Purchase peanut butter. :)

Does that definitely work better than chocolate? Or do I have peculiar mice?

Cheese only attracted the cat who, as it happens, is frightened of mice.
Get to the vets, and get the cat some testosterone injections ; )
Bacon rind, apparently.
When they did it at work they used peanut butter and yes, it worked.
You don't know where to get peanut butter?????

Go to the garden center and get 2 or 3 peanut trees. They stay small so the peanuts are easily harvested. After flowering in Spring, tie some fine mesh nets under the tree so you catch all the mature nuts as they fall. Get two sturdy oven trays and put one on ground, add one layer of peanuts and cover with the second tray. Then proceed to drive over the trays with the car 8 or 9 times. Gather the crushed nuts and mix with softened butter in a 1:1 portion. Put in fridge and use as needed.
We've use Nutella (nut infused chocolate spread) with great success
Peanuts ( Groundnuts) grow under ground Wildwood so your plan has a fault.
chocolate covered raisins work.
so does cake
A licked malteser.
Lick it before you put it in the trap - not after.....
"so does cake "

When does it not?

;-)

What a waste of chocolate. Get a cat (or a Lancashire Heeler).

unless they're burrowing mice? ;-)

Can borrow Indi my monstrous cat if you like, she even scares me so Gawd help any mice round her!
Sounds like they're made for American mice, don't think you'll lure our lot with peanut butter and chocolate.
Mash up some bread with water to get a dough then put it in the trap. As mice are grain eaters it is quite attractive too them. It still works when it is dry. More importantly put the traps next to walls in places which mice use as a thoroughfare.
chcocolate spread worked every time here along with a little bit of patience. took a few nites of them licking off the spread andit was a case of building up their confidence before GOTCHA !!! we had the traps in the garden, the slugs seem to like chocolate spread too, move your traps to alongside a wall or cupboard, this mite help
We used peanut butter, it really does work.
