Honey bees buzzing is caused by their wing beats. This is true in normal flight as well as cooling or defending the hive. The sounds are different for different reasons, but this sound emanates from their wings. Current study into how bees communicate also reveals that when a bee returns to the hive with nectar they use a sound emanating from their thorax to assist in directing the other bees to the source.  This is in conjuction with a specific dance that also aids in direction.  It is known that queen bees make noises for various reasons, known as tooting and quacking .  These sounds are also shown to come from their thorax...
